    Program Goal: Increase the quality and availability of career and technical education opportunities that support student transitions to further education and employment.
    Purpose: The career awareness and development program helps students connect classroom learning to the workplace by providing opportunities for students to identify their interests, goals, aptitudes and abilities, to explore the world of work, and to develop decision-making and life planning skills. The grant will provide opportunities for teachers of 4th - 8th grades in 1,700 schools to learn about career development, to visit businesses that will demonstrate how the Learning Standards are used, and how to plan integrated classroom experiences that prepare students with the skills needed for career planning.
    Population and
    Service Levels:
    This program serves elementary school programs throughout the state. Approximately 500 school districts and 119 separate elementary buildings in Chicago Public School District 299 are affected. Staff development will be provided to 5,000 instructors, 700 counselors and 170 administrators.

    Formula-driven grants are available to Regional Offices of Education and Intermediate Service Centers.
    Performance Measures
    & Activities
    A study is being conducted to measure the impact of the Career Awareness and Development grants on classroom activities and student performance. The study will emphasize how career development activities can further student's achievement of the Illinois Learning Standards.

    Increase in outcomes from FY99 to FY00:

    • 100% Increase in training activities;
    • 55% increase in elementary personnel visiting business and industry sites;
    • 300% increase in use of individualized career plans by students;
    • 23% increase in use of career information systems.
